On May 26, the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce hosted its evening at the Tavernier Business Center, which houses the Upper Keys office of Keys Weekly Newspapers. Mull, former owner of the Tavernier Business Center, recently sold the building to Brian and Connie O’Connor. The O’Connors cut the ribbon alongside Mull and Sally Stribling, estate agent at Coldwell Banker Schmitt. About 100 people from the business community, as well as Keys Weekly and Overseas Media Group teams from Marathon and Key West, attended the event. The Tavernier Business Center is located at 91760 Overseas Highway in Tavernier.

Jim McCarthy is a northerner who escaped snow and freezing temperatures to live warm by the water. A former crime and courts reporter and editor of two Western New York newspapers, Jim has been honing his craft since graduating from St. Bonaventure University in 2014. During his 3 years in the Keys, Jim enjoyed connecting with the community. “One of my college professors was always preaching to be curious,” he said. “Behind each person hides a story that is unique to him and deserves to be told. Behind every community lies resilience and resolve in difficult times. As writers, we are the ones who paint the pictures in the minds of readers of emotions, struggles and triumphs. Jim is president of the Key Largo Sunset Rotary Club, which is made up of energetic members who serve the young and old in the community. “It’s a band that lives by the motto ‘Service Above Self’,” he says. “We did service projects at Tavernier Nursing Home, sitting and socializing with the residents. “We also provided cameras for young students exploring the Keys ecosystem.” Jim loves sports, family and spending time exploring under the water’s depths.
